The Greek dictionary can wait a moment while we examine that phrase it’s Greek to me. Shakespeare is considered the author of that famous phrase. Julius Caesar contained the line but for my own part, it was Greek to me. It meant that it was impossible to understand. But Shakespeare didn’t come up with this phrase. It was in common use before Shakespeare wrote it. It likely dates back to ancient Rome. A similar phrase in Latin – Graecum est; non legitur – means it is Greek and cannot be read. But it was Shakespeare’s works that kept the phrase alive until today.
A Greek dictionary could be important. While people think the languages of antiquity are dead, they are not. Many of our present words have roots in Latin and Greek. So by studying the Greek language a person could learn more about our own language. People who have a good grasp of the language go far in life. That means language both for talking and for reading and writing.
Where words come from is the subject of etymology. In our language many of the words have roots in the Greek. These origins can often be found by looking into a Greek dictionary. Many of our prefixes and suffixes come from Greek. Androgynous combines two Greek roots. Andro means men, Gynous means not masculine, or not men. The word is basically man and not man like. Google has one of the best translators online. It may as well be a Greek dictionary because it translates from English to Greek. Or you can translate from English to Greek. People who don’t speak the same language can use it to communicate. It has flaws but it does the job.
