A Little Tip: Helpful Bay Window Treatments
You buy a house which has a superb looking bay window. You think about all the great ideas you are able to dress it. You then think about curtains or shades, next you start to shop around looking prices up. Now it hits you, the actuality of outfitting this beautiful window. There are some window covering trends that might be able to provide help.
Premade drapes simply won’t cut it!
You cannot just go and buy ready to go drapes or shades. You’ll have to get all of them tailor made, and how much is that going to cost. A good deal I am able to tell you, that is if you do not shop around.
Selection Time: Curtains or Shades
So that the first call is should it be drapes or shades. Bay home windows may look fabulous with tailor made roman shades. They will look sophisticated and work really well whenever there’s home furniture to each side of the window leaving very little room in order to hang drapes. Maybe there’s a window seat fitted. If this appears to be true then roman shades are a simple method to dress your bay window. But if your bay is nice as well as clear throughout then drapes are a great way to go. Particularly long to the floor drapes. Long curtains actually dress the window and provide a hint of luxury. Additionally they help to make the area really feel hotter in the winter.
Measuring For Shades
You must take a large amount of care whenever measuring shades to suit a bay window. If you get this wrong then the shades will certainly go right in to the bin. Quite often they cannot be altered. Especially if they are far too narrow or short.
If you’re measuring for roman shades then remember to leave a gap of around an inch in between the shades. This is to allow for the binds turning out to be a lot more voluminous as they are pulled up. They’re going to start to push into one another.
A small tip I find helpful is to add an additional half inch to the drop ( length ) measurement. The reason being because and do not ask me why, the shade once made and hung seems to shrink a bit. So adding it on right now means it’s more likely to fit spot on once made.
Measuring for curtains in a Bay Window treatment
This is a hard one so concentrate for I’ll only say it once. Well perhaps twice as I ramble on a bit infrequently :- )
The fashion recently has been to fit decorative bay window rods. Particularly here in the U.S. My recommendation is easy do not even the really good ones are real discomfort in the backside. They are far from easy to fit right. Then the curtains struggle to open and close using the special passing rings. So what does one suggest, well glad you asked. My fave way of dressing a bay is to fit top boards. These are simply six inch by one inch timber boards. You fit them over your window on brackets just like fitting a shelf.
Then hang curtains from the underside of the boards on a curtain track. Then eventually cover the top board with a fabric covered pelmet or as you americans say Cornice. They can be made in all shapes and sizes and look ultra modern or standard.
So that the steps to fitting curtains in a bay window are :
1. Cut and fit the top boards in the bay over the windows.
2. Then measure the width and take the drop ( length ) measurement from the track to the floor.
3. Then measure the leading edges of the top boards for making a pelmet / cornice.
So you now have all the sizes you need for making the curtains and top treatment. The very next step would be to choose your fabric and get them made.
